November to April
Explore Kalpitiya Lagoon by boat, taking in mangrove scenery and watching for birds along the water’s edge.
Discover Life Along the Lagoon
Set out from Makara Resorts to explore Kalpitiya’s lagoon and mangroves by boat. As you glide across quiet waters towards sand dunes, take in the fishing villages along the shore and shrimp farms in the distance. Look out for birds and other wildlife that make their home beside the lagoon.
Puttalam Lagoon covers about 327 square kilometres, with mangrove islands and seagrass meadows throughout, creating a rich, sheltered habitat that rewards slow exploration by water.
Let your gaze wander in search of birds and wildlife that call the lagoon home, as the mangroves, shallows and open water offer many places to look.
Fishing communities still work the lagoon, as part of a traditional coastal way of life, and you may glimpse this daily rhythm of work as you pass through.
Look for shrimp farms in the distance, ponds where shrimp are cultivated, harvested and supplied to markets, which have been part of Puttalam’s coastal economy since the 1980s and still shape local livelihoods.
